Hi, Rusty Belden from our family at Belden's Automotive & Tires. With the start of 2017, most of us are busy getting organized and trying to stick with our New Year's resolutions. But have you ever prepared a New Year's resolution when it comes to caring for your car? Did you know that old man winter can affect your vehicles components? Here are some common questions we get asked that can be fixed by regularly maintaining you vehicle during the winter months.
Why does it never fail, it's so cold outside, wind is blowing, and I head out to work and my vehicles battery is dead?
- Cold temperatures reduce a vehicle's battery power so it is important to keep the connections clean, tight and corrosion free. Batteries won't always give warning signs before they fail, so a good idea is to have your battery tested periodically.
Gas tank half full or half empty during the winter months?
- Resolve to keep the gas tank at least half full at all times. During winter it decreases the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Overall, you wouldn't want to be left stranded, would you?
Why should I resolve to maintain my car at the beginning of the year?
- The new year is a good time to remember all the little things that may pass you by throughout the busy year. Make sure the exterior and interior lights are working and the headlights are properly aimed. Check to see that heaters, defrosters, and wipers are working properly. This is all to ensure good visibility as you are driving down the road in any weather.
Why does my tire pressure light always come on when it is colder outside? How does this affect my tires?
- During cold snaps, your tires contract and if the tire pressure lowers enough it will trigger the TPMS on your vehicle to turn on. During the cold months, tire pressure should be checked often. Because your tires do contract, making sure your pressure is set to the recommended standard is important.
